Beer Pong Rules: The Complete Guide to Playing Beer Pong

Beer pong is the undisputed king of party games. Whether you’re at a college tailgate, a backyard barbecue, or a Friday night house party, knowing the rules separates the champions from the people drinking way too early.

Here’s everything you need to know.

What Is Beer Pong?

Beer pong is a drinking game where two teams take turns throwing ping pong balls across a table, trying to land them in the opposing team’s cups. When a ball lands in a cup, the other team drinks the contents and removes the cup. The first team to eliminate all of the opposing team’s cups wins.

What You Need

ItemStandard
Table8 feet long (a standard ping pong table works, or a folding banquet table)
Cups20 plastic cups (16oz / Solo cups), 10 per team
Balls2 regulation ping pong balls
BeverageYour choice — beer is traditional, water + a side drink is popular
Water cup1 per side for rinsing balls

How to Set Up

  1. Place 10 cups on each end of the table in a triangle formation (4-3-2-1), pointing toward the center
  2. Fill each cup about 1/3 full of beer (or water if using the “side drink” rule)
  3. Place a water cup off to the side of each triangle for ball rinsing
  4. Each team stands behind their cups

How to Play

Determining Who Goes First

Each team selects one player. Both players make eye contact, count “3-2-1,” and shoot simultaneously. The team that makes it goes first. If both make it (or both miss), repeat.

Basic Gameplay

  1. Each team gets 2 shots per turn (one per player if playing 2v2)
  2. Throw the ball and try to land it in one of the opponent’s cups
  3. If the ball lands in a cup, the opposing team drinks the contents and removes the cup
  4. After both shots, the turn passes to the other team
  5. Continue until one team eliminates all 10 cups

Winning

The first team to sink a ball into all 10 of the opposing team’s cups wins. The losing team must drink all remaining cups on the table.

Standard Beer Pong Rules

Re-Racking (Reformation)

Each team gets 2 re-racks per game. You can request the remaining cups be rearranged into a new formation. Common formations:

Cups RemainingCommon Re-Rack
6Triangle (3-2-1)
4Diamond or Square
3Triangle (2-1)
2Straight line
1Center (single cup)

Bouncing

If you bounce the ball off the table and it lands in a cup, it counts as 2 cups — the one it landed in plus one cup of the opponent’s choice. However, the defending team is allowed to swat away a bounced shot after it hits the table. Direct throws cannot be swatted.

Heating Up / On Fire

  • Heating up: When a player makes 2 consecutive cups, they announce “heating up”
  • On fire: When a player makes 3 consecutive cups, they’re “on fire” and keep shooting until they miss

Rollbacks

If both players on a team make their shots in the same turn, the balls are rolled back and that team gets 2 additional shots (called “bring it back” or “rollbacks”).

Rebuttal (Redemption)

When the last cup is sunk, the losing team gets a rebuttal — each player shoots until they miss. If they manage to clear all remaining cups during rebuttal, the game goes to overtime (3 cups each, 1 re-rack, no rebuttal).

Fingering / Blowing

Some house rules allow the defending team to:

  • Finger: Scoop a spinning ball out of a cup before it touches the liquid
  • Blow: Blow a spinning ball out of a cup before it settles

This is controversial. Decide before the game starts whether these are allowed.

RuleDescription
Island / Solo CupA cup that’s separated from others — calling “island” and sinking it removes 2 cups. One call per game.
Death CupIf a player drinks from their cup and sets it back on the table, it becomes a “death cup.” If the opponent sinks a ball in it, the game is over instantly.
Celebrity ShotEach team gets one “celebrity shot” per game — a non-player takes the shot for them
Behind the BackIf you shoot and miss, but the ball bounces back to your side, you can shoot again from behind your back

Winning Strategy Tips

  1. Aim for the back cups first — they’re harder to hit later when formations shrink
  2. Use the bounce strategically — it’s worth 2 cups but risky because it can be swatted
  3. Get in your opponent’s head — trash talk is part of the game
  4. Stay hydrated — seriously, drink water between rounds
  5. Practice your arc — high-arc shots land with less splash and settle into cups more reliably

FAQ

How many cups in beer pong?

Standard beer pong uses 10 cups per side (20 total), arranged in a triangle formation.

Can you bounce in beer pong?

Yes — a bounced shot that lands in a cup counts for 2 cups, but the defending team is allowed to swat away bounced shots after the ball hits the table.

What happens if you knock over a cup in beer pong?

If the shooting team knocks over a cup, the defending team sets it back up — no penalty. If the defending team accidentally knocks over their own cup while trying to swat a bounce shot, that cup is removed.

What size table do you need for beer pong?

An 8-foot folding table is standard. A regulation ping pong table (9 feet) also works great and provides a premium playing surface.

Do you have to drink beer in beer pong?

No! Many players fill cups with water and drink from a separate beverage of their choice. This is more hygienic (ping pong balls touch floors, hands, and pets) and lets everyone play regardless of alcohol preference.
